Revised 7/16/2010
The Foundation 4 Factors- Make sure your pages are searchable by the search engines.
- Build useable, compelling, and people friendly original content.
- Select keywords that people actually use.
- Target one keyword and closely related keywords to a page (unique title and description for each page).
#5 -- Keyword Usage & Content Relevance
- Use the keyword in the title tag at least once. Try to keep the keyword as close to the beginning of the title tag as possible. (Google displays only 65 characters in their search results.)
- Use it at least three times in the body copy on the page (sometimes a few more times if there's a lot of text content). There may be value in adding the keyword more than 3 times, however, adding more instances of a term or phrase tends to have little to no impact on rankings.
- Use the keyword at least once in the alt attribute of an image on the page. This not only helps with web search but also with search, which can sometimes bring valuable traffic.
- Use it once in the URL.
- Use it at least once (sometimes twice when it makes sense) in the meta description tag. Note: that the meta description tag does NOT get used by the engines rankings but rather helps attract clicks by searchers from the results page (as it is often the "snippet" of text displayed in the search results).
#6 -- Raw Link Juice
A strong link strategy requires both link building from popular sites and quality sites (so your site has enough link juice) and intelligent internal link structure (to ensure that you're flowing that juice to the right places).
#7 -- Anchor Text Weight
Use internal links with accurate, relevant anchor text. Seek external links with the anchor text of the phrase you're targeting.
#8 -- Domain Authority
Operate your site in a manner consistent with the engines' guidelines. If you want to earn a lot of trust early on in a domain's life, get lots of sites that the engines already trust to link to you.
